School of Bed Prep

Are you interested in being impressed with the high quality work that the young people in our program can accomplish? Then read on, because this blog post will contain information about lots of different ways to see and experience the great work LEAF is doing.

Freshly prepared beds!

For the spring crews, preparing beds has become the staple farm task during work sessions. At LEAF, we like to make sure that everyone knows why what they’re doing is meaningful. Preparing beds, following each step meticulously and making sure all of the measurements are correct, can mean a lot for the vitality of a plant that will be in that bed for months. Whatever is raised in that bed may then go on to a preschool or a restaurant, or maybe in a LEAF kit. LEAF youth know that the work they do matters, even when it can mean shoveling and raking for hours! The spring crew has been able to develop their bed prep skills incredibly over the past few weeks, focusing on excellence and efficiency each time. It’s been impressive to watch them grow in such a short amount of time!

In addition to work sessions and time in the field, our Leadership Series, happening every Sunday afternoon for six weeks, has focused on developing concrete skills needed to lead a group. We’ve talked about creating culture in a group, and how “leadership” isn’t just for the person in charge, but can happen at every level of a team or organization. This past weekend, Shane (resident Games Master), led three different activities, and prompted the youth to think about how each one could be used to benefit a team. LEAF uses games and initiatives to get youth warmed up before a challenging farm task, or to refocus the group’s energy, or to loosen up after an intense workshop.

Over the next few weeks, our Leadership Series will focus on understanding different leadership styles, and how each youth can find their own brand of leadership. And, of course, we’ll be preparing more beds!
