Hands-on Field Trips & Classroom Visits

LEAF provides hands-on, experiential learning opportunities to students in grades 3 through 12 through on-farm visits as well as bringing workshops to your classroom. Our four acre farm in Landisburg, PA includes sustainably managed vegetable gardens with 40 varieties of crops, a commercial teaching kitchen, produce handling and storage facilities, a greenhouse and propagation house, and a three season outdoor classroom space.

Seed to Plate: The Story of Your Food

45 min - 1 hr - Elementary School Age

Join us in a workshop that explores how food grows! Together we will learn about the journey a seed takes to arrive on your plate and share stories about the food we love. Students will also get a chance to taste-test one or more vegetables as produce is available.

2 - 4 hrs - Middle School and High School Age

In this hands-on experience, students will be immersed in the world of canning and preserving. They will learn about the process from start to finish and taste the end product. This workshop is a great conversation starter on preventing food waste and entrepreneurship!

Why is Food Cheap?

1 hr - Middle and High School Age

Farmers work incredibly hard to feed millions of people. This simulation asks students to be farmers and make hard decisions on how ‘their’ family farm will evolve over time. Afterwards, we follow the story of corn to understand why processed food is so cheap and think critically about how we value food.

Let’s Make a Pizza

45 min - Elementary School Age

1.5 hrs - Middle and High School Age

Take a “journey” around the United States to discover how far ingredients in a pizza travels until it reaches your table. This simulation explores the concept of food miles and the impacts of a global food system.
